10 FREUNDE DES HAFENS Mercy Ships takes much needed specialised medical help and long-term development cooperation to some of the poorest countries in the world since 1978. To this end, Mercy Ships operates the world’s largest private hospital vessel with a per- manent crew of more than 400 volunteers. More than 1,600 volunteers from more than 35 countries and a variety of pro- fessions are on duty every year. As a Christian charity, Mercy Ships regards access to medical help as a basic human right. It strives to bring hope and healing especially to those people who belong to the poorest of the poor and who have become outcasts of society due to distorting and disabling diseases, very often aggravated by extreme poverty. Being treated by Mercy Ships sometimes saves lives and almost always resto- res quality of life and personal dignity. We are very happy that AIDA Cruises as well as Stena Line and especially the PORT OF KIEL, the entity that brings us all together, enthusiastically support our important and invaluable mission. Dazu betreibt Mercy Ships das größte private Hospitalschiff der Welt mit einer ständigen Besatzung von über 400 ehrenamtlichen Mitarbei- tern. Jedes Jahr sind über 1.600 Ehrenamtliche aus mehr als 35 Ländern und den unterschiedlichsten Berufen im Einsatz. Als christliche Hilfsorganisation betrachtet Mercy Ships den Zugang zu medizinischer Hilfe als Menschenrecht und hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Hoffnung und Heilung besonders für Menschen zu bringen, die zu den Ärmsten der Armen zählen und die darüber hinaus durch entstellende und behindern- de Krankheiten, vielfach verstärkt durch extreme Armut, zu Ausgestoßenen ihrer Gesellschaft geworden sind.
