13 PORT NEIGHBOURS Heute, in einer auf Perfektion getrimmten digitalen Fotowelt, zeichnen sich die historischen Aufnahmen durch einen salopp- unperfekten Perfektionismus aus. Man darf die Arbeitsweise der damaligen Fotografen nicht mit heutigen Maßstäben messen. Un- bewegliche Plattenkameras und unhandliche Stative in radebre- chenden Ausmaßen machten das Fotografieren zu einer ernsten Angelegenheit. Man fuhr auch nicht zum Beispiel einfach zum Hafen und machte ein paar Aufnahmen. Vielmehr bekam man als Fotograf einen Auftrag, in der Regel von einer Institution oder vom Kaiser. Erst dann fuhr man in besagten Hafen, baute seine Ausrüstung auf und fotografierte, fuhr zurück ins Labor und ließ die Platten entwickeln. Bis circa 1880 wurden Stiche (Holz-, Kup- fer- oder Stahlstiche) hergestellt, die dann erst gedruckt werden konnten. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war man endlich in der Lage, die Aufnahmen zu rastern und damit zu drucken. Anfänglich nur in Schwarz-Weiß, Grau gab es nicht. You can’t compare how photographers in the olden days used to work with today’s standards. Static plate cameras and impractical stands made the art of photography serious business. You wouldn’t just go down to the harbour to take some photos. You would receive an order – usually by an institution or the Emperor himself. Only then would you go down to the harbour, set up your gear and take photos, go back to the studio to have the plates developed. En- gravings (wood, copper or steal- engravings) were custom until 1880, and those would then be printed. By the end of the 19th century photographs were being rasterized and then printed, initially in black and white only, there was no grey.
