Wir sehen es gern, wir riechen es gern, wir fühlen es gern, wir hören es gern, wir schmecken es gern“ – dies ist eine von vielen Erklärungen, die der Meeresbiologe Wallace J. Nichols in seinem Bestseller „Blue Mind“ dafür liefert, warum viele Men- schen so fasziniert vom Element Wasser sind. Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen belegen: Wer amMeer wohnt, am Fluss und in Hafennähe, ist zufriedener und glücklicher als der Durchschnitt. Wir Kielerinnen und Kieler haben das Glück, „am Wasser gebaut“ zu sein. Das Meer und der Hafen bestimmen maßgeblich das Lebensgefühl und die Atmosphäre in unserer Stadt. Sowohl die touristische als auch die ökonomische Seite prägen Kiel als Standort im Ostseeraum. Der Seehafen Kiel ist ein Paradebeispiel für das Wachstum und den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg der nördlichs- ten Landeshauptstadt. Als Dreh- und Angelpunkt unserer maritimen Wirtschaft ist der Seehafen auf Erfolgskurs: Im Jahr 2017 wurden erstmals mehr als sieben Millionen Tonnen Güter umgeschlagen; rund zwei Millio- nen Passagiere gingen an oder von Bord. Und der Seetourismus gewinnt weiter an Bedeutung: Im kommenden Jahr wird Kiel erstmals mehr als 150 Anläufe von Kreuzfahrtschiffen erleben. “Water is the only element that appeals to all our senses. We like seeing it, we like smelling it, we like feeling it, we like hearing it, we like tasting it”. This is one of the expla- nations why so many people are fascinated by the element of water, stated by the marine biologist and bestselling au- thor Wallace J. Nichols in his book “Blue Mind”. Scientific research shows: Those who live by the sea, river or near a port are happier than the average human being. We, the citizens of Kiel, are lucky to live near the water. The sea and the port significantly characterise our lifestyle and the flair of our city. Both the touristic as well as the economic aspect shape Kiel as a location in the Baltic re- gion. The port of Kiel is an example par excellence for the growth and economic success of the northernmost state capital city. Our port is the hub of our maritime economy and is on the road to success: In 2017, for the first time more than seven million tons of goods were handled and about two million pas- sengers went aboard or left a ship. And the sea tourism gains more and more importance: In the coming year Kiel will see more than 150 cruise calls for the first time in the port history. DR.
