49 BETWEEN NORTH & EAST Biofuels can replace fossil fuels, timber products can replace concrete and paper can replace plastic. Customers are already today asking SCA for sustainable pro- ducts and will do so more and more in the future. There will eventually not be any market for products that are not manufac- tured by sustainable means in the future. Forests with biological diversity As Europe’s biggest private forest owner it is important to use the forests respon- sibly. They are managed in such a way that in a hundred years’ time they will be as rich in timber, biodiversity and leisure experiences as they are today. Another important part of its sustainability work is SCA’s constant endeavor to make all the company’s operations more efficient and thereby reduce resource usage and environmental loading. Rightfully so! The paper mills in Ortviken and Östrand are probably the plants with the world’s smallest carbon footprints of their kind. Optimized transportation Efficiency is also a way to achieve sustainable operations when it comes to transportation. The more efficient the transportation is, the lower the environmental loading becomes. When trucks and ships are full, they emit less carbon dioxide per ton freight carried. So, SCA introduced a new schedule for its RoRo vessels in 2016. The econo- mic efficiency of the ships has been significantly increased by reorganizing the vessels’ schedules and connecting the Baltic and North Sea routes. This change amounted to an equivalent sa- ving of the capacity of half a vessel. As part of this reorganization, SCA is now with its new schedule calling the Ostuf- erhafen in Kiel through which SCA and Iggesund Paperboard are carrying over 800.000 tons of forest products to customers all over the world. “The cooperation with PORT OF KIEL has been excellent and professional from the very beginning” says Jörn Grage, SCA Logistics GmbH. Technical fleet improvements have also led to an ad- ditional emission reduction per carried ton. Furthermore, the vessels’ crews have been trained in eco-driving and the optimum routes for the ships have been determined in order to minimi- ze fuel consumption. The vessels are of course also being run on ultralow Sulphur oil. Responsibility for people and society Sustainability is not just about the environment and efficiency; it is also about taking responsibility for people and social matters. SCA endeavors to be a good member of society where- ver it has operations. The pursuit of sustainability is not just fine words.
