In Küstennähe, in Häfen und in der sensiblen Ostsee verwendet TUI Cruises außerdem freiwillig ausschließlich den geschlossenen Modus. day by highly efficient air conditioning systems, innovati- ve light control as well as software-based energy manage- ment systems. Apart from that, routes are optimized and slow-steaming is applied. Low-friction and eco-friendly TBT-free underwater silicone paint is used. Last but not least, 0.33 tons of fuel are saved by abandoning the mini- bars in the cabins. A good feeling – matching the slogan of the feel-good fleet. Emissions TUI Cruises cuts emissions through an advanced exhaust gas purification system, made of a hybrid scrubber and a catalyst. The result: 60 percent less particle, 74 percent less nitrogen oxide and 99 percent less sulphur emissions. This is how it works: the catalyst reduces nitrogen oxi- des, the scrubber washes the sulphur out of the exhaust gas. The scrubber can be operated in open or closed loop mode (hybrid). In the open loop, sea water is used and the cleaned washing water is finally discharged into the ocean on the high seas. In the closed mode, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is added to fresh water and the cleaned water is then disposed of on shore. By the way: The scrubbers of TUI Cruises are used world-wide and not only in the Special Emission Control Areas. Near coasts, in ports and at the sensitive Baltic Sea, TUI Cruises voluntarily and exclusively uses the closed mode. Water It is a key element of TUI Cruises’s environment strategy to handle fresh and waste-water in a responsible way. This means that a large part of the drinking water is generated from seawa- ter by the ships’ own desalination facilities and waste-water is treated onboard to become environmentally compatible again. A number of activities save a considerable amount of water every day. For example the condensation water of the air con- ditioning system is used for the laundry. The use of towel cards reduced the towel laundry by 30 percent. The newbuilds of TUI Cruises do have entire state-of-the-art purification plants on- board to clean all waste-water. The purified effluent is so clean that it is either discharged overboard or disposed of on shore at the ports’ waste-water reception facilities. “Mein Schiff 3” and “Mein Schiff 6” were actually the first cruise ships to dispose of their effluent on shore at the brand-new waste-water treatment facility at Kiel’s Ostseekai. ( See also article on waste-water treatment facility in Kiel on page 26.) Waste Where there are many people, a lot of waste is produced. It would certainly be best if this waste would not accrue in the first place. Through little changes, like e.g. providing water dispensers, TUI Cruises saves 2,500 water bottles per day and ship.
