Un- til today, Kiel has been the market leader of the new ferry connections with Russia and the Baltic States. Jörg Rüdel also realised the need to act according to the market needs and initiated the change of the HVB from being a municipal owner-operator in 1996 to becoming the privately owned SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG. As their CEO, he managed port affairs for another ten years. He built Norwe- genkai, the Hafenhaus and pushed the extension of the Ostuferhafen systematically. Both port directors, Egon Schönfeld as well as Jörg Rüdel, proved to have the vision of their time and put down the founding stone of today’s port. The ferry traffic to Scandinavia, the Baltic States as well as to Russia are still the backbone of the port business – every day. During the last ten years handling power increased to 6.5 million tons and will be increased even more in the following years to almost eight tons. We currently employ about 300 people. Kiel now plays in the first league of Baltic ports with an annual two million ferry and cruise liner passengers. ist Kiel bis heute Marktführer. Auch erkannte Jörg Rüdel die Notwendig- keit zum marktgerechten Handeln und überführte den städtischen Eigenbetrieb der HVB 1996 in die private Rechtsform der SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG. Als Geschäftsführer des Unternehmens bestimmte er für weitere zehn Jahre die Geschicke des Hafens. Er baute den Nor- wegenkai, das Hafenhaus und trieb den Ausbau des Ostuferhafens systematisch voran. Beide Hafendirektoren, Egon Schönfeldt als auch Jörg Rüdel, haben Weitsicht in ihrer Zeit bewiesen und die Grundsteine für unseren heutigen Hafen gelegt. Die Fährverkehre nach Skan- dinavien, ins Baltikum sowie nach Russland bilden nach wie vor das Rückgrat des Hafengeschehens – je- den Tag. In den letzten zehn Jahren haben wir die Umschlagsleistung auf 6,5 Millionen Tonnen gesteigert und werden sie in den nächsten Jahren auf knapp acht Millionen Tonnen erhöhen. Zurzeit beschäftigen wir mehr als 300 Mitarbeiter im Unter- nehmen. Mit jährlich mehr als zwei Millionen Fähr- und Kreuzfahrt- passagieren spielt Kiel in der ersten Liga der Ostseehäfen.
